Product Details

Hoya nummularioides is a charming and relatively rare species within the extensive Hoya genus, prized for its compact growth habit and delightful fragrance. Originating from Southeast Asia, this small-leafed Hoya features round, succulent, green leaves that are densely packed along its trailing stems, creating a lush, verdant appearance even when not in bloom. The true allure of Hoya nummularioides lies in its flowers: small, star-shaped, white blossoms with a central pink or red crown that emit a sweet, intoxicating scent, especially in the evening. These flowers appear in clusters (umbels) and can bloom prolifically under optimal conditions, making it a favorite among indoor plant enthusiasts for both its aesthetic and aromatic qualities.

Care Guide:

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate moderate light levels. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. A position near an east or west-facing window is ideal to provide the light it loves without the harsh midday sun.

  • Water: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Hoya nummularioides prefers consistent moisture during the growing season but will not tolerate soggy soil. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.

  • Humidity: Benefits from high humidity but is quite adaptable and can do well in average household humidity. If the air is dry, consider increasing humidity around the plant using a humidifier or a pebble tray with water.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm conditions, ideally between 18°C to 29°C (65°F to 85°F). Protect from cold drafts and ensure the temperature does not drop below 15°C (59°F).

  • Feeding: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer with a diluted, balanced, liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter to every 8-10 weeks or stop altogether if growth slows significantly.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix. A mixture containing orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss is suitable, providing both moisture retention and adequate drainage.

  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound, so choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one.

  • Pruning: Prune as needed to control growth or to remove any yellow or damaged leaves. Pruning can also stimulate new growth. Be careful not to remove the peduncles (flower stalks), as Hoyas can rebloom from the same spot in future years.

  • Pests and Problems: Watch out for common pests such as mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Overwatering is a common issue, so ensure the plant is not sitting in waterlogged soil to prevent root rot.

  • Propagation: Can be easily propagated by stem cuttings. Place a stem cutting with at least one node in water or moist potting mix. Roots should develop within a few weeks, after which it can be planted in its own pot.

Hoya nummularioides is a delightful, easy-care plant that brings beauty and fragrance to your home or office. With its compact size and cascading vines, it's perfect for small spaces or hanging baskets, allowing you to enjoy its sweet-scented flowers up close. Proper care will ensure this charming Hoya thrives, offering a stunning display of foliage and blooms.
